National SEO

National SEO Services Built to Compete Nationwide

National SEO services start where the map pack ends, with a search that has no nearest business to win it. Somebody has to cover the subject better than everyone else on the results page. I work out of Houston, and the calls I get about this come from owners whose closest rival sits three states away and still outranks them. That's a different fight. The site I build has to hold a whole subject nationwide and still rank city by city.

National SEO Services Start With Your ZIP Code

Competing nationally means competing against sites with a five-year head start and a much bigger content library. Give me your ZIP and I'll tell you how your market compares beyond your home city.

National SEO is the same root system, just given room to run: one garden reaching toward every market, not only the one down the street.

The three pieces

What National SEO Includes

My first website was a GoldenEye cheat-code page, built in Dreamweaver with my dad looking over my shoulder. It had one job. It covered every level of the game. I've done SEO and web design since 1998, and I think that lesson about depth is still the best one I own. Any business selling past its home market needs the same depth, whether it ships boxes or sells a subscription. Three pieces carry it. Each gets its own card below.

National SEO services — long straight rows of one crop running to the horizon, one line per row — Caleb Schallert.
National SEO is the same row, run to the horizon.

Topical Authority

I've watched loose posts slide out, so I cover a whole subject.

Technical Health

First I make sure Google can crawl every page.

Link Authority

Links get earned, slowly, through writing other people want to cite. Cleaning up somebody else's bought links has eaten more of my hours than earning them the slow way ever did.

The strategy

Building Topical Authority That Actually Competes at Scale

A bed with one tall tomato goes over in the first wind. A bed planted whole holds. A national search offers no proximity, so I cover the subject more completely than the pages already there.

  • Gap analysis comes first, meaning what the top results cover that your site leaves out. You read it before I build a single page.
  • One main page anchors the subject. Supporting pages carry whatever would bury it.
  • No two of your pages chase the same search.
  • Six to twelve months is what a competitive national term takes, and you hear that number from me before work starts.

I start by reading what the top five pages answer. I learned that from a plan I took over that used the same keyword list as every rival and went nowhere.

I write titles and copy to answer the question behind the search, the way my on-page SEO page explains. Supporting pages link up to the anchor.

National SEO services — a mature orchard tree with its root flare showing, smaller trees in rows behind — Caleb Schallert.
Authority is the old tree. The young rows grow in its shelter.

The report

What a Month-One Report Shows

I send the gap analysis first and add your technical baseline after it.

  • Every query gets its own line.
  • You will often get more from a small position gain than from traffic that never buys.
  • I combine paid and organic.
  • You hear about cannibalization the week I find it.

You see every query reported term by term from where it started, and each figure carries its start date and method.

My lead generation page covers how those visits turn into calls.

The foundation

Technical Health and the Authority Layer Underneath the Content

Local rivals can lean on proximity, but nationally one blocked section of your site can hold back everything else.

  • The technical pass starts from your own site and the first crawl, and I size it to a national campaign.
  • You need backlinks and brand mentions to rank. AI answers tend to cite those sources too.
  • I keep checking long after the fix goes in.
  • You get technical reports and content reports separately, which shows you where a stall comes from.

Fixes come from the technical SEO side and authority comes from off-page SEO, and both start while the content is being written. You should be able to tell whether a stalled ranking traces to the pages or to the plumbing underneath them. The AI SEO services page covers the answer-engine side of the same work.

A plugin update had broken a canonical on one redesigned site I opened.

National SEO services — a field drain uncovered at the edge of a crop, clean gravel and pipe under healthy rows — Caleb Schallert.
Nobody sees the drain. The rows above it are the proof it works.

Beyond one country

Competing Nationally and Expanding Beyond One Country

Once a second country enters the picture, the work changes again. The choice between a country-code domain and a subfolder is hard to undo after it ships, and hreflang tags and per-market wording follow from whichever way it goes. International SEO has its own page for that.

  • Another currency or language rewrites the playbook.
  • Steady work over a year has outranked a month of aggressive spend.
  • Start in one or two markets and prove the model first.

Houston is home base, and the work goes anywhere the buyers are. This page covers one country in one language. The two cards below explain how that differs from local work and when it's the wrong spend.

How a National Strategy Differs From Local

For a multi-location brand I build city pages that rank locally without fighting national terms. I price after the audit with no rate card.

Frequently Asked Questions

These only live on this page. If yours isn't here, ask me below.

The Basics

How Is National Different From Local?

Proximity settles most local searches. Nationally that edge is gone, and authority and depth decide it.

How Long Does National SEO Take?

A competitive national term takes six to twelve months, and I tell you before work starts.

Can You Do Multiple Locations?

I plan city pages with the national terms so they never compete.

What Drives National Rankings?

Two things do most of the work. Your pages have to cover the subject more completely than whoever holds the top spot today, and outside sites have to vouch for you. A site Google can't crawl cleanly wastes both.

What Is National SEO, in Plain Terms?

Your site shows up for the searches that matter anywhere in the country, with no map pack to help.

Topical Authority & Content

What Is Topical Authority, and Why Does It Matter More Nationally Than Locally?

It measures how fully your site covers a subject, beyond any one page on it. Thin sites survive locally on proximity alone. Nationally the deeper, better-connected competitor usually wins, because proximity never enters the picture.

Show 14 more questions

How Much Content Do I Need to Compete Nationally?

Enough supporting pages to answer the full range of the topic, which a competitor's single page can't match. Fewer pages than you'd expect, and deeper ones.

Do I Need a National SEO Agency, or Does One National SEO Expert Cover It?

Most businesses probably need one person with a clear process. I run the strategy and the technical health myself, and the content plan comes along with them, so no account layers sit between you and me. Where three people each own a third of a job, the middle third tends to get lost.

What's the Difference Between Hiring for Ongoing Work Versus Running a Single National SEO Campaign?

A campaign is one push. I keep adding links a rival can't buy.

Can Content Alone Win National Rankings Without Backlinks?

Seldom. You need links and brand mentions too.

Technical Health & Authority

How Much Does Technical Health Matter for National Rankings Versus Local?

It matters more nationally. A local site can lean on proximity and survive a crawl error that would cost a national site its ranking.

What Role Do Backlinks Play in National SEO Specifically?

Between two equally well-written pages, links usually separate the one that ranks from the one that doesn't. I coordinate them with the link-building work.

Should I Run Paid Ads While National SEO Builds?

Ads make sense when leads can't wait for the organic build. National rankings move slowly, so paid traffic covers the gap.

How Do National SEO Packages Differ From a Custom National Strategy?

Packages get quoted before anybody has looked at your site, which usually means a standard build with your name on it. A custom strategy starts from the gap analysis and follows what your specific competitors are doing.

Can a Small Business Realistically Compete Nationally?

Narrow niches make it realistic. The smaller the addressable market inside the national one, the easier it is to out-build a bigger, less focused rival spread across everything at once.

Process & Results

How Do You Track Progress on National Keywords?

Every month I read Search Console term by term for each priority query. I want to see which ones are gaining impressions and position, and which pages are losing ground to a competitor's update. A blended average would more or less hide both.

What Does a Month-One National SEO Report Show?

In month one I give you a technical baseline and your starting positions. I measure every later number against them.

Will National SEO Cannibalize My Local Rankings?

Correct architecture prevents it. Local and national pages target different searches from the start.

How Is a Multi-Location Brand's National Strategy Different From a Single-Location Brand's?

City pages have to rank locally without cannibalizing the brand's national terms, which takes a coordinated structure. It's a bigger job than one site's plan multiplied by the number of cities.

How Do You Measure Whether National SEO Services Are Working?

Each month I measure your priority terms and leads against your baseline.

What's Included

National SEO services here mean topical authority content and the technical groundwork underneath it. A link profile gets built on top of that, sized to compete beyond your home market. The internet marketing blog breaks down what topical authority takes to build.
