SEO Services as One Accountable Engagement

SEO services, the way I sell them, come down to one person owning whether your site ranks. That person is me. I audit before I quote, every time, because what's costing you traffic is usually something nobody has opened since launch. A redirect that loops. A page quietly outranking your own home page.

What SEO Services Means When I Sell It as One Engagement

When I sell SEO services, you're buying one person who has to answer for all of it. That person is me. I've sat on the other side of the table when a technical vendor in one city and a writer in another both did decent work and never once talked to each other. The site came out worse than it went in. Nobody was in charge of the whole thing, and it showed.

  • I pull every URL you have and sort them by what Google did with them: kept or dropped.
  • DNS, hosting, and whatever firewall sits in front of the site get checked before I read a word of the copy, because skipping that step has cost me weeks before.
  • Redirects get traced hop by hop until each one lands on the first try. Most sites I open have at least one chain nobody remembers building.
  • Each page gets one search term to own, and only one, so your pages stop competing against each other for the same result.

I keep a greenhouse. Nothing in it sits where it sits by accident, and when a plant stops producing I can usually walk back to the decision two seasons ago that caused it. This is the biggest piece of the internet marketing service I run, and a bad call in month one is still charging you rent in year three.

SEO services — one greenhouse plot with soil, irrigation, vines, and a harvest table all under one light — Caleb Schallert.
One plot, one light, everything connected. That is the whole engagement.

What's included

What's Included

Seven pieces, and they only work together.

SEO services — seven garden tools laid in a row on a bench, each recently used — Caleb Schallert.
Seven tools, one bench. All of them get used on the same plot.

The Audit First

I read every URL you have and tell you which ones Google kept, which it dropped, and why. One page should own one search. Two of your own pages chasing the same term is the most common thing I find.

Technical SEO

This is where I check whether Google can crawl and index the site at all, and then the speed, the schema, the canonicals and the redirects, plus the DNS and the firewall sitting in front of all of it. The long version is on technical SEO.

On-Page Work, and What Isn't Written Yet

The titles, the headings, and the copy you already have on the page are what I'd call on-page SEO, and the pages you haven't written yet come through content marketing services. Both run on the same plan and the same calendar, and both get written to answer whatever somebody typed into Google, which is a different job from circling a keyword eight times.

Links, and Who Says Your Name

Everything that happens away from your own site, the mentions and the links and the reviews, is off-page SEO. Earning those is a craft of its own, so link building services has its own page here, and I don't start on it until the site can hold the weight.

Local, National, or Across a Border

I've had a plumber with one truck and a brand that ships to every state call me in the same week, and they needed almost nothing in common. One needed the map pack. The other needed depth, and a lot of it. That's the gap between local SEO and national SEO, and once either of them sells into Canada or the UK it turns into international SEO, which has its own page here because it's the one people get wrong most.

Turning the Ranking Into a Phone Call

A number one ranking that nobody calls is a number on a report and not much else, and I've had to say that to owners who were perfectly happy with the report. So lead generation services is the part where I make sure the traffic turns into a booked job. In practice that's the landing page the ranking points at, a form that asks for a name and a number instead of eleven fields, and the note that goes out on day two when they didn't pick up the phone. It isn't glamorous work, and it's usually the part that was missing when somebody tells me their last round of SEO "didn't work."

One Report, Once a Month

Indexed pages, positions, traffic, and leads. I write what moved, what didn't, and what I'm doing about the part that didn't. If a number goes the wrong way you'll hear it from me before you find it.

The process

How I Deliver It

The order is not negotiable, and it's the part clients argue with me about most. Everybody wants the blog posts first.

Here's the order, and what it costs you to skip one:

  1. The audit. Every URL, what Google kept, what it dropped, and the reason.
  2. Then I write the plan for the site down, so that one page owns one search, and I tell you which of your pages are about to lose that argument.
  3. Then the technical fixes, which means anything that stops Google from crawling and indexing the site, plus speed, schema, canonicals, redirects, DNS and the firewall.
  4. The pages themselves, rewritten to answer what somebody typed.
  5. Links, once the site can carry them.
  6. Local, national, or international, matched to where your money comes from.
  7. A report on the last day of the month, whether or not it was a good month.

Bottom to top, in order. Nothing gets built on a layer that isn't finished yet.

Where this stands

SEO Agency, SEO Company, SEO Consultant, SEO Firm, and What I Won't Do

People search for this under four different words and end up shopping for the same thing. What matters is what the person behind the word will and won't do, so here's mine.

SEO Agency, SEO Company, SEO Consultant, SEO Firm

Agency and company usually mean a team, with an account manager standing between you and whoever does the work. Consultant and firm usually mean something smaller, or one person. I work under my own name. Whichever word you typed, you get me, and you get me in month eleven too.

No Guaranteed Rankings

Nobody can guarantee you a ranking, and I'd be careful with anyone who says they can. Google doesn't publish the algorithm and changes it a few times a year without asking any of us, so the people promising position one have usually just not been at this long enough to get the phone call the morning after an update. I've taken that call. What I can put in writing is the work, meaning the audit, the plan, the fixes, and a report every month that you can hold me to.

No Bought Links

Do I buy links? No. I've cleaned up after people who did, and getting a site out from under that took longer than the links ever worked. Ask me where any link came from and I'll show you.

No Client Names, No Invented Numbers

I don't publish case studies built on numbers I can't show you the source of, and I don't put client logos on my page to borrow their credibility, because if I haven't done something I'd rather not claim it.

How I Price It

I don't publish prices, and it isn't because I'm hiding them. A single storefront and a company selling into four countries are not buying the same amount of work, so one rate card would overcharge one of them and shortchange the other. What happens instead is that I run the audit first, see what's broken and how much of it there is, and then give you a number for that job. You'll have the number before you commit to anything, and if the audit turns up something I can't help with, I'll tell you that instead.

Timing

What Changes, and How Long It Takes

Almost everyone who calls me has already paid somebody for this once, and sometimes twice, and I don't hold that against anybody because it's the shape of the market.

  • Most owners can't name the page that should rank for their best term, and that's usually where we start.
  • If nobody can say when the site was last crawled, I run the crawl before anything else gets touched.
  • If a page fell out of Google tomorrow, most businesses wouldn't notice for a month, and that gap is the first thing I close.

I built my first site in 1998. GoldenEye cheat codes, Dreamweaver, my dad looking over my shoulder. Most of the years since have been spent as a director of SEO, with a whole portfolio of sites under me at once.

The first step is the free growth audit, and it's free because I'd rather find out early whether I can help you. A technical fix can show up within a week of the next crawl, and content and links take longer than anybody wants them to.

I think about it the way I think about my garden. The roots go a long way down before anything shows above the soil, and that's the frustrating part, but it's also the whole point, because once they're down somebody with a bigger budget can't buy their way past you in a quarter.

SEO Services as One Engagement

What Does “SEO Services” Include When It's Sold as One Engagement Instead of Nine Separate Ones?

The audit, the plan for the site, the technical fixes, the writing, the links, and a report every month. One person carries all of it. Split those across three vendors and each one does good work in a direction the other two never heard about. Sequence is most of this job, and sequence is the first thing that gets lost.

Is This Only for Businesses Starting From Zero, or for Established Sites Too?

Both, and for different reasons. If you're starting from zero, you get the URL structure right the first time, which is a lot cheaper than digging through it two years later. If you've had a site for a while and growth has stalled, there are usually two pages fighting over one term, or a leak that nobody has gone looking for yet, and the same audit finds either one.

Do I Need Every Part of It, or Can I Start With Just One Piece?

Start with one piece if that's what the budget allows. Technical work alone, or content alone, each has its own page here. What I'd tell you first is that they lean on each other. Content on pages Google can't crawl earns nothing, and a spotless site with nothing worth reading earns about the same.

What's the Difference Between Hiring the Whole Engagement and Hiring One Sub-Service Like Technical SEO on Its Own?

Technical SEO on its own fixes one layer and stops. Crawl, index, speed, schema, and out. Hire the whole thing and that same work becomes step three of seven, with a plan in front of it and content and links behind it. If you already know your problem is technical, hire the technical page and keep the difference.

Agency, Company, Consultant, or Firm

What's the Difference Between an SEO Agency, an SEO Company, an SEO Consultant, and an SEO Firm?

Not much, once you get past the letterhead. Agency and company usually mean a team, and sometimes an account manager who relays your questions to the person doing the work. Consultant and firm usually mean a smaller shop, or one operator. I'm the second kind. Whichever word you searched, the person who runs your audit in week one is the person writing your report in month eleven.

Should I Hire an SEO Agency, or Is One SEO Consultant Enough?

Depends on how much has to get built at once. A brand running this in eight markets needs more hands than I have on a Tuesday. Most single-location and regional businesses do better with one SEO consultant who can name every page on their site from memory than with an account that changes hands every quarter.

Is “Search Engine Optimization Services” Just a Longer Way of Saying the Same Thing?

Yes. Same work, spelled out. I use both because people type both.

Are You an SEO Firm, an SEO Agency, a Search Engine Optimization Company, or Something Else?

I'm not any of those, strictly speaking. There are no layers here and no account team, so there's nobody standing between you and the work. You can call it whatever fits how you're searching, and what you get either way is one person, one plan, and a reply from me within a business day.

How It's Delivered

How Do You Deliver SEO Services Month to Month?

The first month is the audit and the plan, and after that it settles into a rhythm, with the technical fixes and the writing early on, the links once the site can carry them, and a report at the end of every month. I don't skip a step to make an early month look better, because the skipped step always comes back, and it usually comes back bigger and at a worse time.

Do SEO Services Include the Content and the Links, or Only the Technical Fixes?

Both. Technical, on-page, new content, and off-page authority. If somebody quotes you for search work and only touches the technical layer, that's a narrower job than this one. Worth asking which parts they're leaving out.

Can You Take Over From an Agency I'm Already Leaving?

Yes, and I'd open it the same way I open anything else. I read every URL, I look at what's indexed, and I look at what the last team fixed and what they left behind. Most takeovers don't need a rebuild; they need somebody to find what got missed, and it's usually sitting in the redirects or in the URL structure.

How Do You Measure Whether SEO Services Are Working?

Indexed pages, positions on the terms we agreed to chase, and organic traffic. Then the number that pays for all of it, which is how many of those visits turned into a call or a form. You get all four every month, including the month one of them goes backward. I'd rather say it first than have you find it.

Price, Guarantees, and What I Won't Do

How Much Do SEO Services Cost?

I don't publish a price. A single storefront and a brand selling into four countries aren't buying the same work, and a rate card that covers both is only fair to one of them. I quote the job once I've seen the site. You get the number before you commit to anything.

Will Paying for SEO Services Guarantee a Top Ranking?

No. Google changes the algorithm a few times a year and doesn't ask any of us first. I've watched a page that held the top spot for years drop to page three overnight, and nobody who had promised that client a ranking was around the next morning. What I'll put in writing is the work and the monthly report, and if a number drops you'll read it there before you notice it yourself.

Do SEO Services Include Buying Backlinks?

No. Earned only, through outreach and writing somebody wants to cite. A bought link profile looks faster for a quarter or two, and then it costs more to clean up than it ever saved. I've done that cleanup. It isn't fun.

Do I Have to Sign a Long-Term Contract for This?

No. I work month to month, and I've never understood the logic of locking somebody into a year of something they can't see working yet. If the work is paying for itself, you'll keep it. If it stops, tell me and we stop, with no notice period and no argument. I'd honestly rather earn the renewal every month than hold somebody to a contract they've stopped wanting, because that person tells their friends about it, and not in the way I'd like.

Why Choose Me for This Work

A table I once sat at had a technical vendor and an SEO agency blaming each other while rankings dropped. I've done SEO and web design since 1998; here's the story.

What Clients Say

I don't have client reviews on this page yet, and I'd rather say so than fake one; here's how I earn them.

What You Get

SEO services here mean the audit and the site plan. Technical fixes and link work follow, and the report closes the month, all handled by one person. The internet marketing blog goes deeper on how ranking works underneath the results page.
