What it includes

What WordPress Web Design Services Include

I can usually tell how a WordPress site was built before I finish scrolling past the header, from how long the images take to catch up. A slow site and a fast one run on the exact same software. Same core, different care.

WordPress web design services — a tool belt holding only three essential tools, several loops left empty — Caleb Schallert.
Every loop on this belt is either full for a reason or left empty on purpose, same as every plugin I add.

A Custom Theme or Divi Build, Not a Stock Template

I've opened WordPress themes still showing the demo's own stock photo of a coffee cup, because nobody swapped it out. I build the design around your business, with Divi or a theme working as the tool underneath it. Once it's finished, the tool disappears.

A Lean Plugin List

I've found a slider plugin sitting active next to another slider plugin, with no slider showing anywhere on the page. That's what a lean plugin list prevents. Every plugin I add earns its spot, and I can tell you what it's doing.

A Structure You Can Edit Yourself

Admin access stays with you, no developer call needed.

Caching and Security Set Up at Launch

Stale caching that serves last week's price for days is why a working firewall and caching layer go in at launch.

An Honest CMS-Fit and Size Check First

Before I build anything, I'll tell you straight whether WordPress fits and whether the site needs five pages or fifty.

SEO Built in From the Start

I set up titles, headings, and a working sitemap as part of the build, never as an afterthought. A WordPress site built without SEO in mind usually needs the same work redone twice.

Analytics and Search Access That Stay Yours

I've found Search Console verified under an agency that vanished.

The process

How I Build a WordPress Site, Step by Step

Same sequence, first build or rebuild.

This is the order I work in, every time.

  1. Talk through what you need the site to do, and check whether WordPress is truly the right tool for it.
  2. Plan the pages and how they connect, before a single screen gets designed.
  3. Build the theme or Divi layout around your brand, demo photos swapped out first.
  4. Choose plugins, only the ones the site needs, and test each for conflicts.
  5. Turn on caching and a working firewall before launch.
  6. Write titles and headings that make sense. Add a sitemap that works.
  7. Launch, then train you to update it.
  8. Thirty days out, check load times and early errors, then close the project.

Fit check, architecture, build, plugins, security, SEO, launch, training: one section added at a time, checked level first.

The straight answer

When I Recommend WordPress, and When I Don't

Built for a team that edits its own site.

  • A large plugin ecosystem and self-editing bring most people to this page.
  • A single focused landing page usually fits a lighter build better.
  • A large-scale store with heavy inventory needs its own platform.
  • I've opened a site inherited from an owner nobody there ever met, still running a theme no one could name.

I recommend WordPress when you plan to edit your own content often. You also get a huge plugin ecosystem.

It's a weaker choice if you don't care which CMS runs your site (plain web design services may be simpler), or if you need a fully custom application with logic no CMS can handle. I've shipped stores before, but a WordPress build on this page means a brochure, service, or content site done well, not a storefront project, at least not as the default.

Most people here run a local service business that needs to look credible from a phone, or a small office booking appointments without a phone call. I've built for nonprofits too, where the person updating the site is a volunteer with an hour a week to spare.

I ask the same questions either way, and build the same lean foundation for both.

A new site vs. replacing an aging one: same discipline, different starting point
SituationWhat's usually going on
A newer business asking for a first siteWants to start clean and avoid the mistakes a first-timer makes with a rushed theme purchase.
An older business replacing an aging siteInherited it from a past employee or a freelancer who's since moved on; nobody left on the team fully knows what's running under the hood.

I ask the same questions either way, and build the same lean foundation for both. The starting point matters less than the discipline applied once the build begins.

The right platform for the job is obvious once you look at which one's thriving.

The boundaries

What I Don't Do With a WordPress Build

A few lines worth stating clearly before you decide a WordPress build is the right fit.

No Page-Builder Bloat.

I won't stack three page builders, a slider plugin, and a bundle of unused demo content on your site just because a theme shipped with them. If a plugin isn't earning its place, it doesn't ship. I can tell you what every single one on your site is doing.

No Guaranteed Rankings From the Build Alone.

A page-one ranking in writing, before the site is even planned, isn't something I'll sign. A well-built site gives your SEO a foundation; where it lands after that depends on the content and the competition.

No Storefront Build as a Default Here.

Someone once asked me to bolt a full shopping cart onto what was supposed to be a five-page brochure site, two weeks before launch. I turned that scope down. I've built ecommerce sites before; if you need one, ask me directly.

No Abandoning You After Launch.

You get a training session, so the login won't scare you. If something breaks later, ongoing maintenance is a plain conversation.

Outcomes

What Changes When a WordPress Build Is Done Right

Your pages open quickly on a job-site phone.

  • You get the caching layer and firewall running from day one.
  • After launch, I still look at your Core Web Vitals.
  • I once caught a demo theme sitting unused a year after launch and slowing the whole site.
  • The build disappears into the background, fast and secure, exactly the way it should.

I check on your site now and then after launch. One plugin update or a careless new page can throw it off, and I'd rather fix that early.

Here’s what I build for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

These only live on this page. If yours isn't here, ask me below.

What a WordPress Build Includes

What Does a WordPress Build Include?

I build you a custom theme or a Divi layout with SEO built in, and I keep the plugin list short. Caching and security go in before launch. You can edit every page yourself.

Do You Use Divi, or a Different WordPress Page Builder?

Divi is the page builder I use most, since it's the one I know well enough to build lean, fast sites with instead of stacking plugins on top of it. What matters more than the tool is how it's used: a page builder can be fast and clean, or slow and bloated, depending on the build.

Will I Be Able to Update My Own WordPress Site After It's Built?

If editing it yourself matters to you, I build the page structure so you can change text, swap photos, and add pages without touching code, then walk you through it after launch. A site you can't touch yourself isn't finished, no matter how good it looks the day it goes live.

What Causes a WordPress Site to Run Slowly?

If your site drags, it's almost always too many plugins, an uncustomized theme carrying demo bloat it never needed, or no caching layer set up at all. So I choose a lean plugin list and set up caching and security properly before the site ever launches.

When WordPress Is the Right Fit

When Does WordPress Make Sense, and When Doesn't It?

It fits a site you'll update often. For one focused landing page or a large online store, I'll say a different build fits better.

Can You Build Me a WordPress Site If I Already Have a Brand and Content Ready?

Yes, and it goes faster. I still check that WordPress fits, then we go straight to planning pages and building.

Do You Build Ecommerce Stores on WordPress?

I've built stores before, but a full storefront isn't the default project on this page. WordPress web design services here mean a brochure, service, or content site done well. If you need a full store, ask me directly and I'll tell you straight whether it's the right project for me right now.

Rebuilding an Existing WordPress Site

Can You Rebuild a WordPress Site That's Already Live Without Losing Content?

If content matters to you, I audit what's there first, keep the content and structure worth keeping, and rebuild the parts that are slow or bloated. This is a full rebuild project either way, not a quick patch on top of what's failing.

How Do You Keep a WordPress Site Secure After It's Built?

If security worries you, a working firewall and a lean plugin list go in at launch, kept current afterward instead of left to drift. Most WordPress security problems trace back to an outdated plugin or theme nobody was watching, not to WordPress itself.

What's the Difference Between a WordPress Build and a Website Redesign?

A WordPress build is about the platform and how it's built: theme, plugins, structure. A website redesign is a broader project that can apply to any platform, including a full migration off WordPress if that's truly the right call for your site.

Do You Migrate an Existing WordPress Site to New Hosting as Part of the Build?

New hosting means redirects move over untouched.

Will a WordPress Rebuild Break My Existing SEO Rankings?

Losing rankings from a rebuild is a fair worry, but the URLs and redirects earning clicks carry over, and a drop almost always means a rushed rebuild.

Getting Started

How Long Does a WordPress Web Design Project Take?

It depends on how much content and how many pages you need, and whether we're building fresh or rebuilding something live. I'll give you a timeline once I've seen what you're starting with, not a generic number before that.

What Do You Need From Me Before You Start Building My WordPress Site?

A conversation about what the site needs to do, your brand and content if you have it, and a clear look at whether WordPress is the right platform for your situation. That conversation shapes the whole build.

Do You Offer WordPress Maintenance After the Site Launches?

If you're picturing month one after launch, I'm usually still checking in on a site by then. Maintenance runs as a separate conversation, priced apart from the build. I already keep client sites updated and backed up on a schedule, watching for security patches. Adding yours to that list is a straightforward ask.

Why Choose WordPress Over Another Website Platform?

Teams already comfortable with WordPress usually have reason enough to stay, especially when content changes often or a specific plugin only this platform offers is the deciding factor.

Why Choose Me for Custom WordPress Design

One WordPress theme I've opened still showed the demo's own stock photo of a coffee cup. I've done SEO and web design since 1998; here's the story.
