Internet Marketing Service in South Dakota: One Accountable Map.

I'm Caleb Schallert, based in Houston, and South Dakota businesses come here for internet marketing that covers all of it: websites, SEO, video, ads and automation. Same remote-first way of working as anywhere I don't keep a local office: an audit, a plan you get to see, and Search Console data every month, proof included.

Internet Marketing Service Starts With Your ZIP Code

The state runs on local markets, from Sioux Falls out. Give me your ZIP, and I'll tell you straight what results look like for your specific one.

What Working With Me Looks Like

No office in the state. I’m in Houston, and I run clients here the way I run anyone I can’t just drive to.

  • First, a plain look at what exists
  • Then a plan open to your questions
  • Then something you can see, fast

For a business like yours, the first month always looks like that. I’ve never shortened it.

Caleb Schallert, based in Houston, works with clients across the country.

The Market, by the Numbers

South Dakota's population comes in at 924,669 people, 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau estimate), the market a local business is up against.

  • 924,669 people, 46th by population
  • 29,106 employer businesses, 46th nationally (2023)
  • About 31.5 employer businesses per 1,000 people
  • Largest city: Sioux Falls, 209,289 people

I'd call that the hardest market to break into (23% of the state's population), since the rivals pile up wherever the searches do.

The state splits into 2 metro areas by population, each running its own local search reality:

  • Sioux Falls: 308,266 people
  • Rapid City: 156,227 people

The cross-border metro South Dakota businesses also compete in: Sioux City, IA (145,994).

The state splits across 2 federally defined time zones: Central and Mountain, depending on where in the state you are. That's per 49 CFR Part 71. That gap is small enough that it's never once cost us a meeting.

Industries the Workforce Runs On

These three sectors carry more of the workforce than anything else, per the BLS's own count, not my guess.

  • Health Care and Social Assistance: 70,442 jobs, 2024 (where the review count matters about as much as the address does)
  • Retail Trade: 54,087 jobs, 2024 (where the season moves the search volume, and accuracy still wins the map pack)
  • Manufacturing: 45,087 jobs, 2024 (where the search is almost entirely B2B, spec sheets over a map pack)

Swapping the business name on a borrowed template is not a plan. The sector the business sits in is where the plan starts.

Every state page I build carries two answers at once, because an internet marketing search means two different things to two different people.

  • The one searcher who truly means the whole state is usually someone about to move here
  • Voice search skews local harder than typed search does, even inside the state
  • A search from Sioux Falls already reads local to Google before I touch anything
  • Desktop sessions skew toward comparison shopping; phones skew local

I've watched a search go from a statewide comparison to one city name within the same week. Missing either reader costs genuine search volume, and it adds up fast. One page, two jobs.

What I Would Do First for a South Dakota Business

Sioux Falls's field and Rapid City's field don't overlap enough to share a plan.

  • Health Care and Social Assistance is 70,442 jobs strong statewide (2024), so trust signals carry more weight than being nearby, so that's where the build starts
  • Retail Trade is 54,087 jobs strong statewide (2024), so I'd build the accuracy layer first, then let the seasonal calendar guide the rest
  • Manufacturing is 45,087 jobs strong statewide (2024), so this is a research sale, so I'd build the content a buyer reads

A quieter market still gets the same three-part shape from me; it just moves through each part faster. Days 30 to 60 build the Sioux Falls-specific plan; a smaller metro can probably win faster on a thinner field. The audit tells me more about which of these moves matters first than any assumption I'd bring in on day one, and I've been wrong often enough guessing ahead of it that I no longer bother trying. Simple rule, solid results.

SEO company South Dakota — a garden path forking into three rows, the nearest one staked and growing like South Dakota's own wheat prairie meeting the Badlands — Caleb Schallert.
The stake goes into the row that's already growing. In South Dakota that means naming the metro before naming the service.

Seasons, Timing and the Map Pack

I plan a build around several calendars at once, not one borrowed from the biggest industry. That's across 29,106 employer businesses statewide, each running its own seasonal pattern.

  • Health Care and Social Assistance runs the flattest calendar of the three, steady demand year-round
  • Retail Trade climbs every holiday season, the same as it does nationwide
  • Manufacturing runs on order volume, not the calendar

The gap between Sioux Falls and Rapid City is large enough that I plan around it directly instead of quoting one average for the whole state. The calendar decides pace.

Internet Marketing Service in South Dakota: What an Audit Usually Turns Up

None of this is from your site. It is what audits on other sites turned up, set down so you can see what a first look finds.

  • 22 of 157 redirect destinations returned 404
  • Thirteen pages: 364 impressions and one click in three months

Twenty-Two Redirect Rules Pointing at Pages That Returned 404

A personal-injury law firm's redirect table had been checked twice, and both audits looked only at sources: loops, self-redirects, chains, duplicates. Where the rules sent people went unchecked. Comparing 157 unique destinations with the 450 canonical URLs in the XML sitemaps left 33 to test, and 22 of those returned 404. The Spanish content had moved under an /es/ prefix and the table was never repointed. We repointed all 22, 19 of them to the exact /es/ twin, and the final table held 281 rules with none pointing at a 404.

Thirteen Pages All Answering One Question

Thirteen pages on a personal-injury law firm's site were all asking whether to hire a personal-injury lawyer. They ran 373 to 884 words and together earned 364 impressions and one click in three months, and six sat at zero impressions. Blog essays dressed as pages, they competed with the main service page. Four earned something and stayed. The other nine were redirected with a 301 to the pillar guide. Redirecting came first. Trashing came second and purging third, so no 404 ever appeared.

Every state I've built a page for lives in the full United States directory. The figures sit next to the rest of the country there, instead of standing alone.

Quick Answers

Do You Have an Office in South Dakota?

I'm based in Houston, Texas, with no South Dakota storefront to point to. Every client gets the same remote-first process. When a trip is truly warranted, a launch, a shoot, a leadership meeting, I book it. Otherwise the work runs remote, and I don't pretend it's something else.

How Is Working With Someone Outside South Dakota Different From Hiring Locally?

What's different is logistics, not effort. A kickoff call up front and a written plan you can push back on replace a local shop's desk visits. I've caught a slipping number in a monthly report before a client ever asked about it. One person carries the account, not a rotating team.

With South Dakota This Crowded a Market, What Does Working With Me Here Include?

Five pieces make up working together: internet marketing service, website designer, video production service, advertising agency, automation company. Which ones apply is an audit question, and I've been wrong guessing it in advance.

How Fast Can We Start Working Together If My Business Is in Sioux Falls?

I reply within a business day of your first message, no phone tag. Once we've talked through the business, the kickoff call comes next. A written plan you can question comes before anything ships.
